A local restaurant offered to host a small Seed Haven demo garden. A goto place for the ice cream crowd, Papa Sam's is a great location in downtown Stittsville for such a display. We went to work and built a raised bed in a spot previously occupied by pavers and 18 inches of gravel and stone dust. We excavated (shovelled) out 7 inches of that stuff and went up another 11 inches. A good dollop of triple mix gives us 18 inches of excellent soil and great drainage. It's hard to believe we are being timid about planting the garden up when the temperature is 30 C. But, May 24th is the safest date in Ottawa. We'll play that one day by day.
On the favourable side, the first magnolia blossoms appeared today along with a flush of sanguinera. A dandelion also bloomed. These phrenological signs are very welcome and supportive of planting sooner rather than later. Garden centers are mixed as to whether they will have their annuals on display now or later. Last year they did it in early May and, for some, it cost them the whole crop.
Now to decide what to put in Papa Sam's garden!
